Geeqie: the light and powerful image viewer for Linux and more

Introduction to Geeqie

Geeqie is an open source image viewer that focuses on speed, simplicity and compatibility with multiple formats. Born as a GQview fork, it has evolved to offer a modern user experience without losing its light character.

Main characteristics

  • Wide support of formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, WebP and many more, including digital camera RAW files.
  • Folder navigation with adjustable miniature view and full screen mode.
  • Basic editing tools such as rotation, turning, size change and color adjustment.
  • The ability to label and classify images by color and star labels.
  • Integration with external tools such as GIMP, ImageMagick and custom scripts using user-defined actions.
  • History of displacement and soft zoom, ideal to review large collections of photos.
  • Multiplatform compatibility: it works in Linux, BSD and, through community packages, in Windows and macOS.

Installation in different systems

In Debian or Ubuntu-based distributions, just open a terminal and run:

sudo apt-get updatesudo apt-get install geeqie

In Fedora and Red Hat derivatives, the package is in the official repositories:

sudo dnf install geeqie

For Arch Linux users and their derivatives:

sudo pacman -S geeqie

In macOS systems, it can be installed using Homebrew:

brew install geeqie

In Windows, there is an experimental version available on the official project site, although the best experience is achieved in Unix-like environments.

Daily use and workflow

Once launched, Geeqie has an interface divided into three panels: the directories tree on the left, the miniature grid on the center and an extended preview on the right. This design allows you to quickly navigate between folders and select images without losing the context.

The keyboard shortcuts are fully configurable; for example, the space bar advances to the next image, whileCtrl+RIt breaks the image 90 degrees in a time sense. These shortcuts accelerate tasks such as the review of photographic sessions or the preparation of lots for publication.

The presentation mode (slideshow) is activated withF5and allows to set time intervals, soft transitions and loop reproduction, ideal for fast displays or reviews.

Personalization and extensibility

Geeqie stores its configuration in XML files located in~/.config/geeqie/. There you can adjust color issues, sources and zoom behavior. In addition, the menu ofActionsallows you to create custom commands that call external programs, such as applying an ImageMagick filter or uploading images to a cloud service.

For advanced users, there is the possibility of writing scripts in Python or Bash that interact with Geeqie through its command line interface, facilitating the automation of tasks such as batch renumbering or the generation of static web galleries.

Conclusion

Geeqie combines the lightness of a classic view with modern features that make it suitable for both occasional users and photographers and designers who need a fast and reliable tool. Its open source nature, the active community behind the project and its multiplatform compatibility ensure that it will remain a relevant option in the image management ecosystem.
